Winter digging costs more — here's the honest number

Excavating a sewer line in frozen ground runs roughly 20 to 40 percent more in the Twin Cities. The ground has to be thawed before anything can be dug, and that's real time and equipment. If the line is limping and not failing, waiting for the frost to come out in April can save you real money. If it's failing now, it gets fixed now — we'd just rather you know why the winter number is higher.

What's different about this work up here

Sewer laterals are an older-city story around here. Minneapolis, Robbinsdale, Crystal, Osseo and Anoka have plenty of clay and cast iron laterals with joints that mature tree roots find and open up. That's where camera work earns its keep.

Maple Grove is a different animal. It's a post-1970 city, mostly PVC laterals, and its failures tend to be appliance-driven rather than pipe-driven — water heaters, softeners and sump pumps.
