Sump Pump Repair & Replacement in Maple Grove, MN

A sump pump that runs constantly, cycles every couple of minutes, or sits silent with water in the pit needs attention before the next heavy rain. Most are a straightforward swap. If you don't have a battery backup, spring thaw and summer storms are exactly when the power goes out.

Signs you need this

  • The pump runs and runs and the water level barely drops
  • Short-cycling — on, off, on again every minute or two
  • Grinding, rattling or a hum with no water moving
  • Standing water in the pit and no pump activity at all
  • Visible rust on the pump body, or it's over about seven years old
  • No backup pump and no battery

What we actually do

  • Test the float, the check valve and the discharge line before condemning the pump
  • Replace the pump, check valve and any failed section of discharge
  • Install battery backup systems so the pump keeps working through an outage
  • Dig and set a new pit and pump where there isn't one
  • Correct discharge that dumps too close to the foundation — a pump that recycles its own water never gets to rest

What's different about this work up here

Two seasons do the damage here. Spring thaw — the frost comes out of the ground from roughly late March into April and the water table comes up with it, which is when a marginal pump finally quits. Then the summer soaking rains, where three inches overnight puts more water at the footing drain in one night than the pump saw all winter.

Storms and power outages arrive together, which is the whole argument for a battery backup. A primary pump with no backup is a device that stops working at the exact moment you need it.

Questions we get

How long does a sump pump last?

Figure seven to ten years, less if it runs hard every spring. If yours is at that age, replacing it on a dry Tuesday is a lot cheaper than replacing it during a storm.

Why does mine run when it hasn't rained?

Usually a high water table, a stuck float, or a bad check valve letting the discharge run back into the pit so the pump keeps re-pumping the same water.

Battery backup or a water-powered backup?

Battery backup is what we install most here. It works during an outage regardless of city water pressure and doesn't run your municipal water down the discharge.

Can I discharge into the floor drain?

No. Sump discharge goes outside, away from the foundation. Running it to the sanitary sewer isn't allowed.
